Poltava oblast , eastern Ukraine, 1900s. Body- lengs shirt of fine, home - woven linen. Densely gathered into tiny pleats around the neck into a narrow neckband edged with running stiches and edged with a toothed hem stich. Twopart sleeves gathered at the wrists into wristbands. The main parts of the sleeves are attached to the shoulder insets with smocking and tiny pleats. The sleeves, insets, and hem of the shirt are decorated with white -on-white embroidery using satin-stich and pull-thread embroidery techniques.The embroidery on the insets has a combination of rhombus and star motifs. The main parts of the sleeves have three rows of vertical vines - a grape motif. The hem is finished with a double hem stitch and decorated with satin stitch embroidery - a horizontal undulating vine in the guelder - rose motif.
